Mount Maroon Climb via Cotswold Track

The east face of Mount Maroon lit up by the morning sun.  This is a relatively short climb to the summit (966 metres), but it will give you a good work out as it is straight up.  Double click on the photos to see them in full screen.

The most direct summit route is via the ridgeline on the left of the photo.  You cut across to the right at the base of the exposed cliff and up through the gorge, keeping to the left hand track as you come into the old campsite.  The actual summit is to your left and the track to the right leads you up to the natural ampitheatre on the north eastern side of the mountain.

There are other longer routes to the summit (i.e. caves route) and plenty of scrambling to be had if you want to burn off some more energy exploring this mountain.

Take your time and enjoy the views along the way. The climb itself isn't technical, there are parts you will need to lift yourself up and none of it is very exposed.  Just lots of rocks and not so fun on the way down for those of us whose knees and ankles have worn a bit over the years.

Came across these rock wallabies sunning themselves on the porch of their cave.  Good hint for this climb is to bring a light jacket as it is often quite cool on the summit once you have stopped climbing.  Some good supportive footware will help with the climb - bring plenty of water as you will sweat a bit out on the way up and down.

There are views out to the South, East and North on the way up.  The clouds are sitting low on the scenic rim here.

The trail will lead you out onto a rock saddle before the last climb up to the summit.  This is looking towards the south and the scenic rim with the summit being up to the right.

This is looking towards the northern peak and it looks like this is the summit of the mountain, but it is deceptive and it is lower than the southern peak.

The northern peak forms a natural ampitheatre and is worth climbing if you have the time.

At 996 metres, you have uninterrupted views of the scenic rim and the beautiful Mount Barney to the South.
